Temple derived from the Latin word templum means a structure reserved for religious or spiritual activities, such as prayer and sacrifice. It is the most sacred and revered places dedicated to Gods and Goddesses. Temples are also the storehouse of rich cultural and historical heritage of Indian civilization. Some of the well-known Temples in Karnataka are:

Achyuta Raya’s Temple:

This is among the most famous temples of Karnataka located in the Hampi. This beautiful temple was built in 1534 AD which reflects the architectural glory of Vijayanagara Empire. The structure and design of this temple exemplify that it is the most advanced form of the temple built in Hampi. The temple is dedicated to the heavenly deity Tiruvengalanatha, a form of Lord Shiva thirukadaiyur temple.

Virupaksha Temple:

This temple is one of the architectural marvels steeped in beauty located on the bank of the river Tungabadra in Hampi. The temple is dedicated to lord Shiva who is also known as Virupaksha or Pampapati. Pampa is the name of the goddess Parvati the consort of the lord Shiva. The temple is renowned for its three towers out of which the eastern tower rises to a height of 160 feet. This elegant design of this temple enthralls tourists as well as devotes who come here from several parts of the globe.

Hoysaleswara Temple:

This is a temple dedicated to Hindu God Shiva which was built in Halebidu (in modern Karnataka state) during the Hoysala Empire in the 12th century by King Vishnuvardhana. The temple is known for its extremely beautiful walls which are embellished with intricately carved sculptures. The temple houses two shrines one is dedicated to Hoysaleswara and another Shantaleswara named after Shantala Devi, queen of King Vishnuvardhana.
